Is a town on Vancouver Island which over the years has become a popular tourist destination, especially for retirees, possibly due to its proximity to Vancouver and Victoria.

The reason I’m here is to visit with my friend Sandy, whom I met in 2014 on n the Camino de Santiago.

As an aside, Sandy’s guest bedroom is a bit of a shrine to the pilgrimage, the walls being decorated by various passports and Compostelas. Somewhat amazingly, since 2014 she and her sister Cindy have walked the Camino about 11 times between them.

But getting back to Qualicum Beach, my first few days were spent out and about walking in the forest with Sandy and Sophie, the best trained lab ever.

The local forest is only a few hundred steps away and a perfect place to commune with nature on a daily basis

Each Spring Qualicum Beach and Parksville welcome thousands of small Brant geese on their annual migration from Mexico northwards. They stop off to rest and feed on the rich pickings before making their way to breed in Alaska. Local restrictions prevent adults, children or their pets from walking near the geese.

Finishing the day with one of Sandy’s epic barbecues.
